Dear Creative People

Dear creative people,

Why do we as unique individuals strive to be something we are not instead of embracing what we are? Is it because of endless amounts of people telling us we won't be successful doing "this" or "that"? Is it a lack of confidence or courage? Time? Financial insecurity? Or maybe it's too damn hard to be you. Today I am writing to you, so you can understand what it's like to think like or be a creative individual. To understand why we creatives are in a never-ending inner battle with our own brains.

Our Thoughts:

"That's so beautiful, I need to capture it."

"I'll show them."

"I know I can do it, but how?"

"If I just had this (object), I would be able to..."

"I need money..."

"I want to go to (these) places..."

"New Years Resolution #110..."

"All I ask, is that you give me credit for my work."

"You don't understand."

"I tried." - seriously this should count for something right? haha

"Just let me be sad today."

"Who knows, maybe one day I will sell it for a million."

"It didn't turn out quite the way I had hoped."

"I love it." (two years later)... OMG why did I ever think that was good?"

"I can't do this, I can't do that."

The Pros of having a creative mind:

We are always yearning for beauty in everything. We are empathic and intuitive. We love. We are as deep as the ocean blue. We love meeting other creative individuals to collaborate with. We are passionate about our work.  We spit poetry like a bad ass.  We motivate others. We are open-minded. People are jealous of our talents, and its an ego boost. Compliments on our work.  It can be very therapeutic and works as a method of coping.  Every day you learn something new and exciting.

The Cons of having a creative mind:

We think TOO MUCH. We look to our emotions before logic. We overuse descriptive words. We HATE boredom, and yet it comes with everything we do...eventually.  We seek out new adventures and inspirations, and if we can't find them we can easily become depressed. We hate people telling us what we can and can't do.  "Constructive" criticism doesn't sit well with us, and we usually end up spitting it back at you. When we are inspired, we usually annoy everyone who isn't with talking too much about what we desire, rather than just doing it.  Some days we forget to eat because we get so wrapped up in our work. We are vulnerable.

In other words, it's HARD to be a creative person. It's a struggle choosing to put yourself through this. Waking up every day having to build yourself into what you want others to see. Having to start your own business, which take in to account sucks because most artists SUCK at math and accounting stuff. Keeping up with motivation, not getting in creative slumps. Having to put a price on your creativity is the worst thing because at first you usually under or over price your stuff and end up losing people or money.

So why do we continue to put ourselves through this hell you ask?
Simply, because we love it. I sure can't imagine myself doing anything else.
